Mural Installation at Park & Grove

Some of you may remember a food truck I painted back in the fall of 2019 over at The Park Cafe. This was my first mural in Charleston and I was pumped about the opportunity. Fast forward two years, and The Park Cafe has now rebranded itself as The Park and Grove. Located right around the corner from Hampton Park in downtown Charleston, this seasonal eatery is an exciting addition to the block. They will be focusing their lunch and dinner menus on local ingredients, which of course I love.

The branding for the new restaurant embodies this idea perfectly. The branding kit was designed by the talented, Charleston based, Stitch Design Co. One element of the branding materials was a proposal for a mural, featuring the food illustrations used on Park and Groves physical menus. The mural design was laid out as a botanical chart, with the main logo as the header.

When I was asked to enlarge this mural illustration on the side of the building, I couldn’t wait to say yes.

The Big Challenge: The most exciting (and scary) part was the need to reach 15’ high. I assumed scaffolding would be best, but didn’t have enough research in my pocket before I committed to renting some. While I was envisioning indoor scaffolding, what I had reserved was the extremely heavy industrial version. Needless to say I quickly pivoted and invested in a pretty dope ladder. Which leads to my takeaway - always scope out a work site when possible.

The Big Win: I took the plunge and invested in a projector. This was a freaking game changer. I saved myself time mapping out the illustration on the wall and time spent lugging the ladder all around.

Finally, here is a visual of it all coming together from projected image, initial line-work, to rendered painting.

While it wasn’t my design that I painted, I felt that I still brought my own flare and love to the concept. It was so cool to bring a design I genuinely love to life and do so at a restaurant whose mission I genuinely am passionate about. Are you interested in mural in your space? Let’s chat!
